FAQ

Should I see a psychiatrist?

Asking yourself if you should see a psychiatrist can be the first step in accepting that you may need help- and that is very brave. In the past, acknowledging that one had mental health issues was a sign of weakness but today people are able and willing to recognize that looking after ones mental health is just as important as ones physical health.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor that has first studied medicine and then done further specialist training in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illnesses. A psychologist has a degree in psychology and is licensed in clinical, counselling or educational psychology. Psychiatrists and psychologists can work together to support you and care for your mental health.

Will I have to be on medication forever?

When it comes to medication there is no “one size fits all”. There are certain individuals that may need medication on a long-term basis. Others may only need to be on medication for a certain period and are then able to manage without it. These are discussions that will be ongoing during your consultations.

Is there something wrong with me if I have been diagnosed with a psychiatric illness?

Its simple: having a mental illness does not mean you that there is anything “wrong” with you. It means you are vulnerable. It means you have an illness with challenging symptoms. It means that you have an illness that you need to take medication for. You are the same as someone with a medical condition such as diabetes or hypertension.
